In the past few weeks I’ve been thinking hard about whether or not to get a pet. I was originally thinking that I’d buy a pet dog – I’ve always wanted a dog and they seem to be the best companions – but the amount of work needed put me off. In the end I’ve decided to get a house rabbit.

Yes, it’s possible to train a rabbit to live in the house, and apparently it’s not that difficult. I’ve even read that it’s easier to house train a rabbit than it is to house train a cat!

There are a few obvious problems with a house rabbit that almost put me off though. Firstly, how can I stop it from chewing the cables and killing itself? The short answer is that you can’t stop it chewing, so you need to protect all the cables. I’m going to try and arrange all the cables so they are out of reach, but the ones that are I’ll need to cover with some protective material so they are safe for the rabbit to chew.

You still need to get rabbit hutches for indoor rabbits though, as they need to have areas of the house they can go in when they want some alone time. Apparently you can get a relatively small rabbit hutch, as all they will be using it for is sleeping and as a litter tray. When you first get the rabbit it needs to be put in the rabbit cage for a while so that it knows that is where it has to go.

Another problem I’m slightly worried about is accidentally treading on the rabbit! I’ve seen a few people with the same concern, but we all seem to be underestimating the size that most rabbits grow to. Unless you choose a dwarf rabbit they can be the same size as some small dogs, so this isn’t really something to worry about.

I’ll keep you updated as to what happens next!

P.S. Here’s a great video about house trained rabbits….
